Concentration and evenness measures as macro - level scientometric indicators - - - -

چکیده
There exist different types of concentration and evenness measures. What they have in common is the fact that they all try to measure inequality. We will discuss only concentration measures that describe the scatter of items over sources, and this irrespective of the number of sources considered. Concentration measures can, e.g., be used as indicators for the convergence, or divergence of regions. Use of different types of concentration measures as scientometric indicators is illustrated for the publication output of China’s different administrative units (provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities). Three aspects of concentration, each leading to a different Lorenz curve, and resulting in a different partial order, are studied. In each case, we suggest measures respecting the corresponding partial order. Concretely, we study: • classical Lorenz curves and concentration measures • comparison with an internal or external standard • source per source comparison of items Different forms of concentration and corresponding measures are important indicators for the dynamics of an R&D system. We advance the proposition that this aspect has been neglected too much in the past.

Macro-level indicators of the relations between research funding and research output
In response to the call for a science of science policy, we discuss the contribution of indicators at the macro-level of nations from a scientometric perspective. In addition to global trends such as the rise of China, one can relate percentages of world share of publications to government expenditure in academic research. The marginal costs of improving one’s share are increasing over time. Co...
متن کاملEcological Flow Analysis of Network Collapse II: Indicators of ecosystem level vulnerability
Using donor-controlled, bottom-up equations to describe network collapse we systematically investigate the impact each species has on the survival or extinction of other species. Short of extinction, one can determine the integrated losses experienced by the ecosystem. These losses are aggregated into system level indicators, such as entropy, average gain/loss, average time to extinction, etc. ...

Aim The aim of this study is to compare the country output and citation impact as well as to assess the level of interdisciplinarity in the field of tribology research across the period 1998 – 2012. Data & Methods Bibliographic records related to tribology research were extracted from SCOPUS and Web of Science databases for the period of 15 years from 1998 to 2012. Macro-level scientometric ind...
متن کاملA Scientometric Investigation into the Validity of IS Journal Quality Measures
In this study we investigated the measurement validity of the findings in the IS journal quality stream over the past ten years. Our evaluation applied a series of validation tests to the metrics presented in these studies using data from multiple sources. The results of our tests for content, convergent, and discriminant validity, as well as those for parallel-form, test-retest, and item-totot...
متن کاملQualitative Scientometrics
When scientometricians are asked about the relationship between citations and quality, they often argue along the lines that citations could be seen as indicators of use and that that this implies usefulness and impact on other research, which in turn is an argument for using them as indicators of quality. This paper questions the implicit linearity of such a ‘one-dimensional model’ of represen...
